Biography

Savva Isaev was born on January 13 (24), 1725 [2] in the village of Kotelsky (now Kotly) of the Yamburg district of the St. Petersburg province of the Russian Empire in the family of a local sexton [3] .

In 1753, at the end of a four-year training course at the St. Petersburg Slavic-Greek-Latin seminary [2] [4] , Savva Isaevich Isaev was ordained a priest , and in 1768 he was placed in the court church [3] .

In 1783, at the proposal of Metropolitan Gabriel , S. I. Isaev was elected a member of the Russian Academy to participate in the Dictionary , without a ballot, " according to knowledge known in the Russian language ." Savva's father collected the words in the letter β€œ H ” and made comments and additions to the similar list of words [3] . By 1794, Isaev was already a senior court priest [2] .

On January 14, 1795, Isaev baptized Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna , and on July 6, 1796, Grand Duke Nikolai Pavlovich [2] .

On February 11, 1795, after the death of Archpriest Ivan Ivanovich Panfilov , the Russian Empress Catherine II Alekseevna elected Savva Isaevich Isaev as confessor to herself and Tsarevich Pavel Petrovich , with Savva's father appointed to attend the Holy Synod and Archpriest of the Moscow Annunciation Cathedral [3] . Later, he also became the confessor of Maria Fedorovna - the wife of Paul the First [2] .

Immediately upon the reign of Paul I , Savva Isaevich Isaev was ordered to be questioned if he was ordered to learn in confession about the intentions of the Grand Duke and did he think that he had spoken about something? After the interrogation, he was suspended, although with the maintenance of the monetary content [3] in the amount of 6 thousand rubles per year - a very significant amount at that time [2] [5] .

Savva Isaevich Isaev died on December 31, 1799 (January 11, 1800) [3] and was buried at the Lazarevsky cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra [2] [6] .
