Jewish Confederation of Ukraine

The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine is an all-Ukrainian association of public organizations, established in 1999. The Confederation unites independent public, charitable, religious Jewish organizations. The president of ECU is Boris Lozhkin , businessman, investor, vice president of the World Jewish Congress (since May 2018) [1] .

The founders of the Confederation: the Association of Jewish religious organizations of Ukraine, the Society of Jewish Culture of Ukraine, the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Ukraine (Vaad of Ukraine) , the Kiev city Jewish community [2] .

Content

Goals

The main activities of the organization are the fight against anti-Semitism, domestic and international support for the Ukrainian Jewish community, strengthening ties with Israel, and preserving the memory of the victims of the Holocaust .

Activities

  • In September 2018, the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine announced the launch of the project “The Righteous of My City”, which provides for the renaming of streets in most major cities of Ukraine, the allocation of special pensions to the Righteous of Ukraine, shooting a documentary, publishing a book of their stories and expanding the base of internationally recognized heroes. The righteous of the peoples of the world is the common name for people who, at the risk of their own lives, saved Jews during World War II. According to the National Memorial Yad Vashem, in Ukraine there are more than 2.6 thousand of the righteous [3] . Kharkov became the first city to join the project “The Righteous of My City”. In October 2018, the Kharkiv City Council approved the decision on the name of a new street named after Alexandra Belova - the recognized Righteous Among the Nations of the World [4] . In the Dnipropetrovsk region, street names were planned in honor of the Righteous Among the Nations in the city and village councils throughout the region [5] . Cherkasy also joined the project [6] .
  • Also, together with Israeli programmers and with the assistance of the European and World Jewish Congresses, the ECU is introducing a system for monitoring manifestations of anti-Semitism [7] . In addition, the organization participates in conservation and security projects for Jewish buildings, Jewish citizens and communities.
  • In 2019, the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine is preparing to publish the five-volume “Material Culture of Jews of Ukraine” - an illustrated guide to the cultural and historical monuments of the Jewish people stored in Ukraine, which will contain detailed information about the sights, personalities, with whose names these or other works are associated and buildings about Jewish history [8] .
