The building was designed by the 2010 Pritzker Prize laureates Kazuyo Sejima and Rue Nishizawa ( SANAA Architectural Bureau) [2] , who in their projects pay great attention to the distribution of natural light throughout the premises [3] . The Solferain cube is a white almost perfect cube with ribs 35 meters at the base and 34 meters high [4] . It is divided into five floors of different heights. The openings of four different sizes and shapes are randomly located in its thin walls. In order not to impede the propagation of light rays, the number of internal walls is reduced to a minimum and each floor has an open plan . Heating costs are low, because the building is heated by ground water at a temperature of 28 ° C, which are supplied through plastic pipes mounted in the walls from a nearby mine from a depth of 1 km [1] .

In 2010, the building hosted an exhibition of photographs “Views on the Ruhr” ( German: “Ruhrblicke” ), dedicated to the Ruhr region [5] .
