Biography
In 1837 she married fleet commander Isidoro Antoniu Neri. At the age of 29 she became a widow, in her care were three sons.
After the start of the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), the union of Brazil , Argentina and Uruguay against Paraguay, her sons went into the army. Ana Neri sent a letter to the governor of Bahia asking her to take care of the wounded soldiers of the Triple Alliance. Having received permission, she joined the army medical corps. She worked in hospitals, assisted more than 6,000 wounded soldiers.
Being a wealthy woman, she founded a nursing home in the capital of Paraguay at her own expense and worked there selflessly until the end of the war. Her son and nephew, who fought with volunteers, died in battle.
At the end of the war in 1870, Ana returned to Brazil and received several awards for her humanitarian work. By the decree of the Emperor of Brazil, Pedro II was assigned a life-long pension, which Ana used to educate four orphans whom she brought with her from Paraguay.
As a sign of her merits, in December 2009, Ana Neri was declared the National Hero of Brazil.
