Born on March 6, 1835, in the town of Adelöv of the municipality of Tranås, in the family of Per Arvid Ribbing and his wife Carolina Augusta Ehrencrona. Her father was the chairman of the local county court ( Häradshövding ).

When the girl was four years old, the whole family moved to the Hakarp ward , next to Jönköping . Since 1850, Sophie studied at the Royal Academy of Liberal Arts , and then continued her studies at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts with Karl Zone , who later became President of the Academy. Later she went to Paris and worked in the studio of , then continued her studies in Brussels with the artist and engraver Louis Halle .

In the 1860s, Sophie Ribbing had a studio in Copenhagen . In 1866, under the auspices of Galle, she first held a show of her work at the Brussels Salon. In the same year, she successfully participated in Stockholm at the . Later she made long trips to London , where she held exhibitions in 1872 and 1888, and visited The Hague . She also spent some time in Rome with her friend, the artist Agnes Burjeson .

Works of the artist can be seen in the Frederiksborg Castle, the National Museum of Sweden , the Gothenburg Art Museum , as well as in the National Gallery of Norway .

She died on December 7, 1894 in Oslo during a visit to Norway. She was not married.

In 2016, the Swedish National Heritage Board ( Riksantikvarieämbetet ) chose Sophie Ribbing's painting “Drawing Boys” (1864) as one of the works representing Sweden at the European 280 festival [4] - celebrating Europe’s common artistic heritage [5] .
