Biography
Robert de Lyle was the son of Sir Warin de Lail and Alice de Montfort, the daughter of Sir Peter de Montfort and Maud le la Mar. He lost his father in 1296, and entered into the possession of ancestral lands in 1310. Then King Edward I granted him a number of estates, including Harwood in Yorkshire , which Sir Warin also claimed.
Robert has been repeatedly called into parliament as Roberto de Insula or Roberto del Isle . This was the beginning of the story of Barony Lyle . In 1312, Robert received the right to host an annual fair at Shefford in Bedfordshire , not far from his Campton estate. In 1313 he accompanied King Edward II and Queen Isabella of France to Paris , in 1314 he fought at Bannockburn , and a year later participated in the winter campaign in the north. March 16, 1322 Lyle fought at Boroughbridge on the side of the king, in 1328 made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela .
In 1336, King Edward III freed Lyle from service due to poor health. After the death of his wife (1339), Robert tonsured the monks of the Franciscan order, because of which his lands passed in 1342 under the care of the crown. In 1344, Lord Lyle died and was buried in the Franciscan church in London.
