Pupil of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1795-1806). Pupil S. S. Schukin . He received medals from the Academy of Arts: a small silver (1804), a large silver (1805), a small gold medal (1806) for the program "Introduce artists who paint species and talk among themselves about their art . " He graduated from the Academy with a certificate of 1 degree with a sword (1806). [one]
Awarded the title of academician in portrait miniature painting (1807). [one]
In 1819-1821 he participated as an artist in the First Russian Antarctic Expedition of F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P. Lazarev , who discovered the sixth continent - Antarctica .
In 1826-1829 he took part in the expedition of M. N. Stanyukovich and F. P. Litke , aimed at exploring the coast of the Bering Sea and the central part of the Pacific Ocean.
The artist recorded in his work album the newly discovered islands, views of cities and settlements, performed portrait sketches of Aboriginal people, carefully depicted samples of exotic flora and fauna. Watercolors and drawings by Mikhailov, among which there are many sketches, are inherent in great accuracy and reliability. He faithfully followed the instructions received from both the Maritime Department and the Academy of Arts, demanding that “everything represented <...> be a true image of the visible . ” Many drawings retain their original inscriptions, often with an exact date and geographical coordinates, which allows not only to “build” these drawings according to the travel route, but also serves as documentary evidence of the priority of Russian researchers in discovering Antarctica.
