History

The name of the village may come from the ancient word "derben". It is a synonym for the nouns “burlap, derbouzhin”, the verb “derby”, which means: scratching, tearing, pulling. In ancient times, the miller was called the derbenics (Vyatsk.) [2] . One of the meanings of the word “derben” is the hut of the miller [3] .

In favor of the name-oikonym it is also said in B. B. Wagner's toponymic-local history dictionary “The Map Tells” [4] .

The first documented mention of the village of Derben was found in 1891 in documents on the inheritance of the Boratynsky descendants, in particular, the niece of the poet Varvara Rachinsky, as well as in the directory of the administrative division of the Tambov province for 1904 [5] .

In the diocesan information of 1911 on the church parish of the village of Maryinka, to which the inhabitants of the village of Derben belonged, it is said that there were 39 peasant households in the village, 139 people with a male population, 117 [ female ] women [6] .

The second version of the origin and name of the village is put forward by the researcher of antiquity V.F. Konovalov [7] : part of the village of Vyazhlya was donated by Peter I to Major General Ivan Ilyich Dmitriev-Mamonov, who gave the village its name - Derben, as it participated in a military campaign to capture Dagestan fortress Derbent (Iron Gate). The Russian name is Derben. According to old-timers, Derben began to belong to the Mamonovs precisely after the war [8] .

A native of the village of Derben V.F. Konovalov also contacted the administration of the Kirsanovsky district informing that the village where the poet Boratynsky was born [9] , Lesnaya Street 50, is located in the village of Derben. These data were refuted by the Office of Culture and Archival Affairs of Tambovskaya area [10] .
