Biography

Born a writer in Melden, Massachusetts, graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1909, and enrolled at Valparaiso University School of Law in the United States. Indiana; passed the exam of the state commission for the title of lawyer in 1911.

In 1917, Gardner opened a law office in Merced , California.

A few years later he went to work in a sales agency, and another 5 years later, in 1921, opened the Sheridan, Orr, Drapo and Gardner Law Office in Ventura , California.

Gardner was gaining popularity by his vivid speeches at trials until 1933 , but after the release of his first detective novel, The Case of Velvet Claws, he decided to devote himself to literature entirely.

Gardner in 1946 founded and until the 1960s was one of the members of the Committee of the Court of Last Hope, a human rights organization for the review of death sentences. [2] For a documentary book about this organization, he was awarded the Edgar Prize for the 1962 American Association of Detective Writers in the Grand Master nomination [3] .

Gardner also owes the merit of attracting public attention (by publishing an article [4] in Life magazine in 1962) [5] [6] to the cave paintings of Baja California , some of which were later classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

In addition, in 1968, together with Charles Hapgood , Gardner participated in the research of the so-called Akambaro figurines , later uniquely recognized as fakes XX century [7] .

In 1968, Gardner married his long-standing secretary, Agnes Bethel (1902-2002), who became the prototype of Della Street, secretary of the main literary hero of Gardner, lawyer Perry Mason.

Artwork

Gardner wrote several series of novels. The largest number of works (over 80) includes a series in which the main character is the lawyer Perry Mason .

Under the pseudonym A. A. Fair Gardner wrote a series of novels about private investigator Donald Laem and his boss Bert Cool, this series is partly a parody of the Rex Stout series about Niro Wolfe and Archie Goodwin .

Gardner is also the author of several small series of novels (Ed Jenkins, Paul Pry and others - several novels in a series, see below).

Gardner's first published works (since 1923), discovered by critics after he gained success by writing detective stories, were science fiction stories in Pulp magazines that did not bring him fame.

Gardner's documentary works are books on the activities of The Last Hope Court, as well as books on his travels in the Baja California area.

Perry Mason

Unlike other lawyers, Mason not only represents his clients in court, but also, resorting to the help of other persons (in most novels this is private detective Paul Drake), he himself investigates the crimes. Mason’s main opponent is prosecutor Hamilton Berger.

Notes on the bibliography:
