History

The settlement from which the city later grew was founded in 1556 [1] . The municipality of Virachac was allocated to a separate administrative unit in 1787 /

The city is located in the central part of the department, in the mountainous terrain of the Eastern Cordillera , approximately 11 kilometers southeast of the city of Tunja , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 2548 meters above sea ​​level [2] .

The municipality of Virachacs is bordered in the north by the territory of the municipality of Syachok , in the east by the municipality of Rondon , in the south by the municipality of Cienega , and in the west by the municipality of Sorak . The area of ​​the municipality is 68 km² [1] .

Population

According to the 2005 census, men accounted for 52.8% of the population of Virakachi, while women accounted for 47.2% respectively. Racially whites and mestizos accounted for 99.9% of the city’s population; Blacks , mulattoes, and Riesale - 0.1% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 88.1%.

Economy

55.7% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are enterprises of the trade sector, 33% - enterprises of the service sector, 10.3% - industrial enterprises, 1% - enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
