Development
On May 10, 2017, the series was extended for the second season [22] . On November 29, 2017, it was announced that Fuller and Green left the show and that they would be replaced as show runners in the second season, having completed approximately half of the season’s scenarios before that [23] . On January 12, 2018, Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht clarified the ongoing struggle with the installation of the second season, including the participation of Gillian Anderson and Christine Chenovet , the further participation of Fuller and Green - emphasizing that they were not fired at all, but they didn’t leave - given their work schedule, as well as problems with the show runner and budget, while emphasizing the complexity of adaptation and the continued commitment of the channel and Fremantle Media to the series [24] . On February 2, 2018, Jesse Alexander , screenwriter for the Fuller series Hannibal and Star Trek Discovery , was announced co-show runners of the second season with Gaiman. [25]
In September 2018, it was reported that Starz and Fremantle removed Alexander from the role of showrunner. The series was also six weeks behind schedule and was forced to take a break due to an unfinished script for the season finale; Alexander provided several options for the finale, but they were all rejected. Fuller and Green wrote the first six episodes of the second season, but they were thrown out after hiring Alexander to rewrite them. The order for the second season was cut from 10 to 8 episodes (similar to the first season), in an attempt to cut the budget. The actors were not happy with the new scenarios and were often rewritten during the filming, while Ian McShane improvised a monologue. Starz was not quite Alexander's direction over material that was more "conditional", different from the more "atmospheric, hypnotic" tone of Fuller and Green. With the lack of a show runner, producer Chris Byrne and line producer Lisa Kussner became the head of the series [26] .
Filming
The production of the second season began in April 2018, and its premiere took place on March 10, 2019 [27] [28] .
Script
During an interview with Neil Gaiman on June 24, 2016, he discussed plans for future seasons after the first if the show is extended, and noted that the first season covers only the first third of the novel. The second season will have to cover the Lakeside section in the novel, and “the big key moment happening to Mr. Wednesday” is likely to be the finale of the second or third season [29] . However, the Lakeside storyline was carried over to a potential third season [30] [31] .
Casting
On June 4, 2018, it was announced that Dean Winters , Devery Jacobs, and Kahyun Kim would join the cast in season two, where they would play the roles of Mr. City, Sam Black Crow and Media; the latter is now known as New Media after Anderson left the series [12] . It has also been confirmed that Christine Chenovet will not appear in the season due to schedule conflicts [26] .
