Biography

Valerie Fihoff was born on February 16, 1976 in Bonn , Germany . She began to engage in rowing in 1988, was trained in Siegburg at the local rowing club "Siegburger".

She first appeared in rowing in 1994, winning a gold medal in the doubles fours at the junior world championship in Munich.

In 1996, in the lightweight doubles, she marked a victory at the stage of the Youth Nations Cup in Hasevinkel.

The first serious success at the adult international level was in the 1998 season, when she joined the German national team and attended the World Championships in Cologne , from where she brought the gold dignity won in the light doubles. In the same discipline she won at the World Cup in Lucerne.

In 1999, in lightweight singles, she received gold and silver at the World Cup in Vienna and Lucerne, respectively, while at the world championship in St. Catharines she finished fourth in the finals, stopping a step away from the prize positions.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney - together with her teammate Claudia Blasberg took second place in the lightweight doubles, losing only to the Romanian crew at the finish line, and thus won the silver Olympic medal [1] . For this outstanding achievement, on February 2, 2001, she was awarded the highest sports award in Germany, the Silver Bay Leaf [2] .

After the Sydney Olympics, Fihoff remained part of the German rowing team for some time and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 2002, in lightweight singers, she performed at the stages of the World Cup in Hasevinkel and Lucerne, settling in both cases in fourth places.

Subsequently, she received a doctorate in geography . He works as a research fellow at the Department of Geography, University of Bonn [3] .
