Biography

Gabriele Mel was born on February 25, 1967 in the city of Hagenbach , Germany . She was trained in Essen in a rowing club located on the Baldenayse reservoir.

She first appeared in rowing in the 1987 season, when she won a silver medal at the FRG championship in the standings of oar wheelless twos. Once in the main team of the West German national team, she performed at the World Cup in Copenhagen , where she finished fifth in the eights.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul - she started here in the eights program, settling down in the final protocol of the competitions on the seventh line.

The first serious success at the adult international level was achieved in the 1990 season, when she went to the world championship in Tasmania and brought back the silver dignity award won in the classification of wheelless fours - only the crew from Romania passed it in the final.

Since 1991, she represented the national team of the united Germany, in particular this season she performed at the World Championships in Vienna , where she won a bronze medal in four-wheelless quadruples - lost to the Canadian and American athletes at the finish line.

As one of the leaders of the German rowing team, Mel successfully passed the selection for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona - this time as part of the four-seat steeringless crew, which also included the rowers Annette Hon , Antje Frank and Birte Zich , finished third in the final behind the crews from Canada and the United States - thereby won the bronze Olympic medal [1] . For this outstanding achievement, on June 23, 1993, she was awarded the highest sports award in Germany “ Silver Bay Leaf ” [2] .

After the Barcelona Olympics, Gabriele Mel remained for some time in the German national team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1993, she performed at the World Championships in Rachitsa , where she took fourth place in the program of swing armless fours.

In 1994, at the world championship in Indianapolis, she showed the fourth result in oar wheelless deuces. Soon after the end of these competitions, she decided to end her sports career.
