Description

The body is high, somewhat compressed laterally. The skin is quite thick, covered with numerous small scales , poorly distinguishable to the naked eye, each of which carries vertical needles, and in general the scaly cover resembles shagreen leather. Two dorsal fins , in the first 6 spiny rays, and in the second 12-18 soft rays. Caudal fin rounded or truncated. In the pectoral fins there is one large spine and one or two rudimentary soft rays [3] . In some species, a tubular snout (very elongated in Halimochirurgus and Macrorhamphosodes ), and in others, spoon-like teeth for scraping scales in other fish. Depending on the species, they reach a maximum length of 5-22 centimeters.
