Rachel Zimmerman Brahman Rachel Zimmerman Brachman) (born in 1972) is a Canadian -born space scientist and inventor . [1] Brahman invented the “Blissymbol (Blissymbol) Printer” in 1984, making communication with users with physical disabilities easier. Life
Rachel Zimmerman was born in London, Ontario. From a young age, she showed great interest in art, debate, music, and especially in science. At twelve, Brahman developed software using Bliss symbols . Her "Blissymbol (Blissimvol) printer" is intended for people with severe physical disabilities , such as cerebral palsy , as it provides an easy method of communication. The user can simply point to various characters on the page or board using a special touch panel . When the user selects a character, the Blissymbol printer converts the image into written English or French ; allowing you to effectively convey his thoughts. The original idea of the Brahman science project led her to win a silver medal at the Worldwide Young Inventors Exhibition in Canada (1985) and the YTV Youth Television Award. Interested in space technology and assistive intelligence, Brahman now works at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to tailor NASA's innovations to the needs of people with disabilities . [2]
In 1995, Zimmermann received a bachelor 's degree in physics from Brandeis University and a master's degree in space sciences from the International Space University in France in 1998. [3] Zimmerman tried to obtain a master's degree in astronomy from the University of Western Ontario , but two months after the start of the program, she was hit by a car while riding her bicycle and was forced to quit the program. Scientific career
Zimmerman has worked at NASA's Ames Research Center , the Canadian Space Agency , the Planetary Society, and the California Institute of Technology . [3]
Since 2003, Zimmerman has been working as a specialist in education in the solar system and technology and in public affairs at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory . Using her connections with the International Space University, Zimmerman organized a Saturn essay competition for middle and high school students in more than 50 countries. Her work was published in the journal Planetary Report , the journal of the National Space Society and the astrogram of the NASA Ames Research Center . [5] Currently, Zimmerman is currently working on interaction with the radioisotope energy system, as well as education for the Cassini-Huygens mission on Saturn and Titan . Rachel leads teacher development workshops at the annual conferences of the National Association of Science Teachers and the California Association of Science Teachers. From 2013 to 2016, Rachel was president of science education for students with disabilities.
Rewards
In 2011, Zimmerman received the Visionary Award of the Women in Film at the Toronto International Film Festival [1]
