Creative searches for the author

The author’s motivation is most clearly expressed in the Preface: “To the perfect image, only the unprecedented many and great deeds of this Tsar, such as to decorate and enrich this history with eloquence, I was very insufficient. What schools in the Serbian lands are, everyone knows, therefore, and I'm not the best. Reading books alone was to me the Academy and the most important science. For the sake of hope, I hope that, in reasoning as such, I myself confess here to many of my well-known ignorance, in reasoning with such justice, I will not condemn me for the thinness of style in this story; even less for the malfunction or for the insufficiency of the matters of which I wrote. I assure you that the writers haven’t left anything decent to this story, and it cannot be helped by a lack of perfect serviceability, just like the Russian archives, where the affairs and actions of the Onago Monarch are most accurate, but with which I’m only in distant distance , I couldn’t use it a little ... It’s true that it is not great glory to those who use other people's labor, but they can also be called a writer below; however, how little I have care for being powerful for that censure, so much less for fame and title of jealousy in myself. “I will be pleased with that, if my supportive readers find that I was at least a decent collector, and composed a mediocre story for them.”
