History
Since the VIII century, the Benedictines lived here, they inhabited the island for 500 years. Later they were joined by nuns who were forced to flee the tsunami that destroyed their monasteries. At the beginning of the 15th century, nuns left these lands, but soon other nuns appeared here: they escaped from the Turkish invasion of Crete . By the beginning of the XVIII century, only a few people remained here. The Senate of the Republic of Venice located a hospital in San Servolo, which was necessary because of the ongoing war against the Turks. Later, the mentally ill were sent to the hospital.
In 1978, government reforms to psychiatrists led to the closure of the hospital. The following year, the Government of Venice created on the island of Istituto per le Ricerche e gli Studi sull´Emarhinazione Sociale e Culturale ( with Italian - “Institute for the Study of Social and Cultural Marginalization”). He was engaged in the preservation of historical documents related to the psychiatric hospital.
The Venice International University was established on the island in 1995. It appeared thanks to the collaboration of ten universities.
San Servolo is an island with rich flora . Initially, plants were planted for a pharmacy and were needed to treat the military.
