Biography

Son of Marshal of France Jean I de Bross (d. 1433) and his wife Jeanne de Nayyak, ladies de Motte-Jolive. After the death of his father, he inherited the viscouncy of Bridier, the lord of Saint-North, Boussac and Juriel. Before his marriage, he was under the tutelage of Admiral of France Louis de Culan, his cousin uncle.

At the age of 14 (marriage contract of June 18, 1437) married Nicole de Chatillon-Blois , daughter of Charles de Chatillon-Blois, Señora d'Avogur, who died in 1434. In 1454, after the death of Uncle Nicole inherited Pentevr county, and Jean II de Bross took the title of count.

In this capacity, he was a vassal of the duchy of Brittany . In 1465, during the War of the League of Public Benefit with the King, he refused to serve in the Breton army, and Duke Francis II confiscated Pentevr according to feudal laws.

Jean II’s wife, Nicole de Chatillon, had rights to the Duchy of Breton (which had existed since the war of 1341–1364 ). In December 1479, they sold them to King Louis XI for 50 thousand livres and the promise to return them or their heirs Pentevr after he became the duke of Brittany.

In 1532, an edict on the union of Brittany with France was issued, and after 3 years, according to the contract of March 23, 1535, Francis I transferred the county of Pentevre to Jean IV de Brosse - great-grandson of Jean II and Nicole, married to the royal mistress Anne de Pisleux .
