Biography

Cooper was born on October 19, 1831 in Lexington, Kentucky, into the large family of Spencer Cooper and his wife Mary Burton Cooper. He attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania , and graduated in 1851.

In 1861, when the Civil War broke out , he enlisted as a private in Louisville , Kentucky . November 15, 1861 he was appointed sergeant , January 24, 1862 - the second lieutenant in the 20th Kentucky Infantry Regiment [2] . From February to July 1862, Robert Cooper was acting adjutant , then adjutant general of the 22nd Brigade of the 4th Division in the . Cooper showed courage in the siege of Corinth , where he was noted in an official statement by Colonel Thomas D. Sedgewick . In July 1862, he became adjutant general of Major General . He participated in the in August 1862 and was awarded the prize by the Union Army General, while he was captured and released from it on August 30, 1862 by exchange.

On March 26, 1863, Robert Cooper continued serving in the army, and became a lieutenant colonel in the 4th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment (after the resignation of Colonel Bales). On June 4, 1863, Cooper was injured when a horse fell on him during a battle in Franklin , Tennessee. [2] He then participated against John Morgan in his raid . He commanded a regiment at the Battle of Chikamog in September 1864, after which he returned to his homeland on sick leave.

On June 9, 1864, he rejected Morgan's surrender of Lexington and repelled his attack. In April 1865, he participated in battles in Montgomery , Alabama , and in May and July 1865, in Albany , Georgia . He honorably participated in the fighting on August 21, 1865 in Macon , Georgia . He received many awards for his service in these military operations. On March 2, 1867, he was seconded to , where he served as lieutenant colonel and then colonel, took part in the Battle of Resack , Georgia, and the capture of Montgomery, Alabama.

Post-war activities

In 1866, Robert Cooper was appointed major of the 7th Regiment Cavalry Regiment, in which he served on the western border under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Custer . He was the second commander at Fort Macpherson, Nebraska , but by then had suffered a lot from alcoholism . During an expedition against the Cheyenne and Sioux tribes , Cooper ran out of whiskey, which caused him severe withdrawal symptoms. He died from a self-inflicted shot in a fit of delirium tremens on June 8, 1867, at Lake Creek Camp, about 50 miles southeast of Fort Macpherson. His death was initially recognized as suicide, but later changed to death at the hands of an unknown person, in the line of duty, so that his widow could receive a pension [2] .

Cooper was buried at home in Lexington, at Lexington Cemetery Cemetery . [3]

Family

He was married to Sarah Steel Venable ( Sarah Steel Venable , 1841-1888) [4] , was buried next to her husband in the Lexington Cemetery cemetery . They had a daughter who became an artist - Mary Cooper .
