Biography
Originally a Great Russian, he received his initial education in the Kazan military orphan department. In 1810, he entered the ranks of military service in the Vitebsk Infantry Regiment , participated in the War with the Turks and the Patriotic War of 1812 in 1811, and made a trip abroad ; taking part in fourteen battles, he received the insignia of the military order, a medal in memory of the twelfth year and a medal in memory of entry into Paris . In 1829, Ilya Zolotov retired with the rank of staff captain [1] .
In 1832, Ilya Zolotov, with the blessing of the Kiev Metropolitan Eugene, entered obedience at the Kiev-Brotherly Epiphany Monastery ; in 1833 he was appointed economist of the Kiev Theological Academy ; in 1835 he became a monk with the name John, and in the same year he was ordained a hierodeacon and hieromonk [1] .
In 1835, John Zolotov received a golden pectoral cross, left the academic service due to his unhappy health, and was appointed correcting the position of governor of the Kiev-Mikhailovsky Monastery . Eight months later, he left the service for upset health, but according to the conviction of the bishop, he again accepted the post that was left; such refusal and return were repeated once more; local bishops cherished John as an exemplary master [1] .
In 1844, the Kiev diocesan authorities, deciding to recreate the almost deserted Moshnogorsk monastery, appointed Father John the rector there. Here, in August of that year, he received the rank of abbot . Moshnogorsk Ascension Monastery owes him his revival. The monastery at the time of Zolotovβs arrival was almost in ruins [2] , he energetically set about setting up the monastery. For the correct planning of new buildings, he removed a sheer mountain and built cells and monastery services on its leveled ledges, he won a difficult and confusing lawsuit and returned the land taken from him to the monastery; the monastery raised up to 23 thousand rubles of capital without the help of major benefactors, thanks to the skill and energy of its new abbot [1] .
Almost annually receiving an expression of gratitude from the authorities, in 1859, John Zolotov was ordained archimandrite [1] .
John Zolotov died in February 1870 [1] .
