Life
Charles of Orleans was born in the Palais Royal , the official city residence of the Orleans House since 1692. His home nickname was “Pimpin” [1] .
He was the fourth of six sons in the family. He was born a month ahead of schedule, and everyone thought that he would not survive. He survived, he was physically weak and mentally retarded. He was looked after by a servant named Joseph Uginet, who loved him very much [1] .
Charles was granted the title of Duke de Pentevre, who passed on to the Orleans House by inheritance; Charles's paternal grandmother, Maria Adelaide de Bourbon , inherited a huge fortune and title from her father before the revolution . Thus, Orleans was one of the richest houses in Europe.
He died in the Château de Neuilly on the outskirts of Paris in 1828 at the age of eight. Uginet wrote: “Pimpin dies of terrible convulsions, July 25, 1828” [1] . Among his potential brides were his cousin, Princess Carolina Augusta of Bourbon-Sicilian , also born in 1820. Charles was buried in the Royal Chapel in Dreux , the burial place of members of the Orleans House, reconstructed by his grandmother Maria Adelaide de Bourbon, whom he had never seen. Two years after his death, on August 9, 1830, his father became king of France.
