I want to eat your pancreas

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas ( Japanese 君 の 膵 臓 を た べ た い Kimi no Suizo: About Tabetai , “I Want to Eat Your Pancreas”) was originally a web novel published by Yoru Sumino in 2014 on Shousetsuka ni Narou . In 2015, the publishing house Futabasha noticed him and soon the novel was put into print. The cover art was drawn by the artist under the pseudonym loundraw. Based on the novel, three adaptations came out. The manga adaptation came out from August 2016 to May 2017. The adaptation in the form of a feature film was released in July 2017, and in the form of an animated feature film in September 2018.

Content

Story

Spring. April, the time when cherries bloom their last days. He is a lonely high school student, avoiding too close acquaintance with anyone. Once in a hospital reception room, he finds a strange book on which the name "Living Dying" was written by hand. The found book turns out to be the diary of his popular classmate Sakura Yamauchi. It turns out that Sakura is suffering from an incurable disease of the pancreas and that she has only a few months left to live. The main character becomes the only person, in addition to the relatives of the girl who knows about her condition. However, Sakura does not despair, but tries to maintain a normal life as much as possible and, in spite of everything, live a full life. Despite their completely different characters, the guy decides to stay with her during these last few months for her. Spending time with this fun and unpredictable girl, the alienated character of the protagonist begins to gradually change.

Characters

  • “I” ( Japanese 「僕」 “Boku” ) / Haruki Shiga ( Japanese 志 賀 春樹 Shiga Haruki ) is the protagonist of the story on behalf of whom the story is being narrated. Up to the very last chapter, his name is not called. A lonely and reserved guy who spends most of his time reading books. Described by others as an "inconspicuous classmate." She accidentally finds the diary of Sakura’s disease and becomes one of the few people who know the girl’s true situation. After that, they begin to get closer with Yamauchi and spend a lot of time together, despite the fact that the guy is worried about Sakura’s overly cheerful and infantile behavior. After reading the last pages of Sakura’s diary dedicated to him after Sakura’s death, Shiga learns about the true feelings of her friend and the meaning of her words. Thanks to Sakura and the time spent with her, Haruki becomes more open.

  • Sakura Yamauchi ( 山 内 桜 良 Yamauchi Sakura ) is the main character of the story. Classmate Haruki. Cheerful, open and cheerful girl. The exact opposite of the protagonist. Despite the fact that he suffers from an incurable disease, he tries to behave carefree. He keeps a diary of the disease, which describes the events associated with the diagnosis. After Haruki finds him, Yamauchi begins to communicate with him, hoping to brighten up his loneliness until death. Falls in love with Haruki. After another discharge from the hospital, I agreed with Haruki about a meeting, but was killed by a street criminal along the way. Shortly before his death, he leaves notes to relatives and friends on the last pages of his illness diary. She dedicated one of them to Haruki.

  • Kyoko Takimoto ( 滝 本 恭子 Takimoto Kyo: ko ) is Sakura’s childhood friend. Very assertive. Protects Sakura and does not let anyone in who can harm her. For this reason, and also because of his character, he does not like the protagonist and is outraged that Sakura spends too much time with him. After Sakura’s death, Haruki gives her a diary of Yamauchi’s illness, from which Kyoko learns about everything. She is very upset to learn that Sakura and Haruki hid everything until the last. But a year later, she and Shiga become friends, as Sakura wanted. At the end of the work, they come together to the grave of Yamauchi.

Roman

Being originally a web novel, the work was published on the website of custom novels Shousetsuka ni Narou in 2014. On June 19, 2015, the novel was published by Futabasha . The cover of the novel was painted by illustrator loundraw [2] [3] .

Seven Seas Entertainment announced the acquisition of a license for the novel on May 15, 2018. The book was published in English on November 20, 2018 [4] . On February 10, 2019, Istari comics published a license to issue a novel in Russia [5] .

Manga

The manga adaptation of the novel by Yoru Sumino, illustrated by Izumi Kirihara, appeared in Futabasha’s Monthly Action magazine from August 25, 2016 to May 25, 2017 [6] [7] [3] and has 2 volumes released on February 10, 2017 and [8] and June 20, 2017, respectively [9] . The manga is licensed for release in English by Seven Seas Entertainment . Volume 1 was released on January 22, 2019 [4] . Also on February 10, 2019, the Istari comics publishing house announced its intention to release manga in Russia after the release of the novel [5] .

Feature film

Let Me Eat Your Pancreas - a feature film based on the novel, released in Japan on July 28, 2017, in which the main roles were played by Takumi Kitamura and Minami Hamibe [10] [3] . The film was also shown in South Korea at the Busan International Film Festival in October 2017 [11] and November 9, 2017 in Malaysia, where the distributor was GSC Movies [12] .

Animated Movie

A full-length anime film , based on the novel of the same name, was announced in August 2017 [3] . The film was created under the direction of director Shinichiro Usijima at the animation studio Studio VOLN The film was produced by Keiji Mita [13] and composer Hiroko Sabu [13] . The leading animator Yuiti Oka was provided with character design. Yukako Ogawa and Yoshito Watanabe engaged in background management. Noriko Izumo, led by Joji Hata, worked on sound effects. Hiroshi Saito and Mayuko Koyke oversaw the composition of the film. Koremi Kishi was engaged in 3D CG , and Yoshinori Horikawa color design. Yumi Jingugi was responsible for the anime editing [13] . The main musical theme of the film is “Fanfare” ( フ ァ ン フ ァ ー レ Fanfa: re ) , covering the theme of “Shunkashuutou” ( я 秋冬 秋冬 Shunkasu: that , The Four Seasons) . Both songs were performed by the group sumika , whose members also made seiyuu in the film [14] .

The anime premiered in cinemas on September 1, 2018, Aniplex [15] [13] acted as a distributor of the film in Japan.

Aniplex of America Company announced at Anime Expo 2018 the intention to release the film on large screens in North America, as well as in Latin America [16] , which premiered on October 21, 2018 at the Animation Is Film Festival in Los Angeles [17] . Aniplex of America later announced at Anime NYC 2018 that the anime release in the USA with subtitles will take place on February 7, 2019, in English dubbing on February 10, 2019 in cooperation with the distributor Fathom Events [18] .

Madman Entertainment at SMASH! 2018 announced plans to release a film in Australia and New Zealand. [19] The anime premiered at the Madman Anime Festival in Melbourne on September 16, 2018 [20] . The picture was released in wide rental on October 18, 2018 [21] .

The premiere of the film in the UK took place on October 14, 2018 at the event Scotland Loves Anime [22] . At the festival, the film won the Audience Award [23] .

The premiere of the film also took place on November 15, 2018 in South Korea [24] , January 18 in China [25] , January 21-23, 2019 in Italy [26] , and April 12, 2019 will be held in Spain [27] . Selecta Visión is licensed to release the film in Spain, KEM Media is in Latin America with distributors of CineHoyt (in Chile; subtitles), Village Cinemas (in Argentina; subtitles). Distribution company Art House is planning a film on August 21, 2019 in France [28] .
