Edna is a city in the United States located in southeastern Texas , the administrative center of Jackson County . According to the 2010 census, the number of inhabitants was 5,499; according to the US Census Bureau, in 2017, 5,770 people lived in the city [2] .

History
The settlement was founded in 1882 when the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway was built in the district. The branch bypassed Texana, then the administrative center of the district. The city was named after the daughter of the Italian Count Joseph Telfener, who built the railway. The New York, Texas and Mexican Railway , nicknamed "pasta," was built by Italian workers brought by Telfener from Lombardy . Most of the workers after construction left to live in the region. The first train was launched on July 4, 1882, the first store was opened by businessman Gideon Egg moving from Texana the same year, and the first child born in the settlement was named Edna [3] .
On January 22, 1883, residents of the district voted to grant the city the status of an administrative center. In 1886 a post office was opened. The Methodist and Presbyterian churches moved to the city from Texana, with the Presbyterians moving their building. The first newspaper in Edna was the weekly Jackson County Progress . The city has a hospital, a nursing home, a library, a museum, a city park with a swimming pool, three banks, two financial associations, a golf club. The main sources of income for the city are agriculture, oil and natural gas production, oil production services and two grain elevators [3] .

According to the 2010 census, 5499 people lived in the city, there were 2054 households and 1381 families. The racial makeup of the city: 72.7% are white , 14.7% are African Americans , 0.5% are Native Americans, 0.5 are Asians , 0% (1 person) are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 9.1% are other races, 2.6% - two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 34% [8] .
Out of 2054 households, children under 18 live in 36.4%. 45.7% of households were married couples (18.5% with children under 18 years of age), women lived without husbands in 16.6% of households, men lived without wives in 5% of households, 32.8% of households were not by families. Only one person lived in 28.2% of households, 13.3% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.59 people. The average family size is 3.17 people [8] .
The population of the city according to the age range was distributed as follows: 30.1% are residents under the age of 20, 23.6% are between the ages of 20 and 39, 30% are between 40 and 64, and 16.3% are 65 and older. The average age is 36.6 years [8] .
According to a five-year survey from 2013 to 2017, the median household income in Edna is $ 50,139 a year, and the median household income is $ 58,934. The per capita income for the city is $ 21,452. About 11% of families and 16.9% of the population are below the poverty line. Including 30.2% under the age of 18 years and 7.1% over 65 years of age [9] .

City management is carried out by the mayor and the city council consisting of 5 people. Council members are elected by constituency [10] .

Infrastructure and transport
The main highways passing through Edna are:
- US Motorway 59 runs from the northeast of Wharton to the southwest to Victoria .
- Texas State Motorway 111 runs northwest of Hockheim east to Midfield.
The city is home to Jackson County Airport. The airport has one runway 1034 meters long [12] . The closest commercial airport is Victoria Regional Airport. The airport is located about 30 kilometers southwest of Edna.
Education
The city is served by the Edna Independent School District.
Economics
According to the financial report of the city for the 2016-2017 fiscal year, Edna owned assets of $ 17.34 million, debt of the city amounted to $ 4.08 million, city income amounted to $ 5.23 million, and city expenses - $ 5.94 million [13] .
