Biography

Eleanor in her youth, 1660

Eleonora de Olbez was born in the Chateau de Olbez in the noble family of the Huguenots Alexander II Desmiers and his wife Jacquetta Possad de Vandre [3] .

She became the maid of honor to the Duchess de Thouars at her court in Paris. In 1648, she accompanied the duchess to the wedding of her son Henri Charles de Tremuille, who married Amelia, daughter of Landgraf William V of Hesse-Kassel . In the winter of 1664, she went with the Duchess to visit Henri Charles in Kassel. There she met Georg Wilhelm, Prince of Brunswick-Lüneburg , who fell in love with the beautiful Eleanor at first sight. She became his mistress and became titled Lady Habsburg . In the framework of the so-called “marriage exchange”, Georg Wilhelm announced Lady Habsburg and transferred his inheritance rights to Ernst Augustus, elector of Hanover , as he married the former bride of George Wilhelm, Sophia of Hanover . Thus, for Georg Wilhelm, only morganatic marriage was possible [4] . Eleanor, however, wanted to be a full duchess. Georg Wilhelm bequeathed her all his personal property and pledged to take care of her impoverished father [5] .

In 1666 their only daughter, Sophia Dorothea , was born. Eleanor had three more miscarriages, but she could no longer bear the child. In 1674, the girl was legitimized and received the title of Duchess of Wilhelmsburg . Two years later, in April 1676, the couple finally got married. Their marriage was happy.

For political reasons, their daughter Sophia Dorothea (to unite all the Lüneburg lands) married her cousin Georg Wilhelm , son of Ernst August. The marriage was unhappy, and, in the end, George divorced his wife and imprisoned her Alden Castle , where she remained until the end of life.

After her husband died in 1705, she lived in Lüneburg Castle. Sophia Dorothea pushed her husband to let her go to her mother, but was refused. The last years of her life Eleonora de Olbreza spent in caring for her daughter and unsuccessfully sought her release. Almost blind, she died in 1722 at Celle Castle [6] ; in her will were mentioned 342 people.
