Alelia Murphy ( born Alelia Murphy , nee Stuart ; born July 6, 1905 ) is an American centenarian. Since January 8, 2019 is the oldest living resident of the United States .

Biography

Born July 6, 1905 in , North Carolina . She was one of the twelve children of John and Hattie Stewart. After graduating from a local college, in 1926 she moved to New York . On October 7 of the same year, she married Ferd Murphy, with whom she lived 27 years before his death. She was engaged in the manual manufacture of hats, she sewed and baked with pleasure. She also claimed that she loved dancing. Until the age of 90, she independently paid her bills. Her favorite slogan: “There is no time to sleep. Sleep when you die! ”

As of 2018, two of her children were alive.

In January 2019, after the death of Lassie Brown, she became the oldest living person in the United States .
