Discosoma

Discosoma (lat.) Is a genus of Mittens from the Discosomidae family of the order Corallimorpharia . Most species are disk-shaped corals that form a large amount of mucus [3] . They are distinguished by a variety of colors, including metallic and fluorescent shades, striped or spotted [3] .

Biology

Discosoma collects food particles from water. Some species absorb nutrients formed by endosymbiotic dinoflagellates living in coral tissue [3] .

Range

They are found in the Indo-Pacific region, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Australia and the central part of the Pacific Ocean, as well as in the Caribbean and Brazil, in the Atlantic Ocean [4] .

Application

Some species are used for decorative purposes in aquariums [3] .

From red coral Discosoma sp. Along with several other fluorescent proteins isolated from several species of non-bioluminescent corals, a red fluorescent protein ( DsRed ) was obtained [5] . Subsequently, a number of protein fluorophs with improved parameters of structure stability, quantum yield, and various fluorescence spectra were obtained from red fluorescent protein DsRed by directional mutagenesis [6] . These fluorescent proteins, along with the green fluorescent protein from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria and variants of the latter, are widely used in biological research, including cell and molecular biology.

Classification

The genus includes 11 species [7] :

  • Discosoma album (Forsskål, 1775)
  • Discosoma carlgreni (Watzl, 1922)
  • Discosoma dawydoffi Carlgren, 1943
  • Discosoma fowleri (den Hartog, 1980)
  • Discosoma fungiforme (Verrill, 1869)
  • Discosoma molle (Couthouy in Dana, 1846)
