Wendish, Dieter

Dieter Wendisch ( German: Dieter Wendisch ; born , ) is a German rower who played for the German Democratic rowing team in the second half of the 1970s. Two-time Olympic champion, three-time world champion, winner of many regattas of national and international importance.

Biography

Dieter Wendish was born on May 9, 1953 in the commune of Kliphausen , East Germany . He was trained in Dresden at the local sports club “Einheit Dresden” under the guidance of coach Hans Eckstein .

He achieved his first serious success at the adult international level in the 1975 season, when he joined the East German national team and attended the World Championships in Nottingham , from where he brought the golden dignity won in oar steering eights.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal - as part of the crew, which also included rowers Bernd Baumgart , Gottfried Dön , Werner Klatt , Hans-Joachim Luke , Roland Kostulsky , Ulrich Karnaz , Karl-Heinz Prudel and helmsman Karl-Heinz Danilowski , won first place in the eights program and thereby won the Olympic gold medal.

After the Montreal Olympics, Wendish remained in the GDR rowing team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1977, he performed at the World Championships in Amsterdam , where he won gold in fours.

In 1978, in the fours, he won the world championship in Karapiro , thus becoming the three-time world champion in rowing.

Being among the leaders of the East German national team, he successfully passed the selection for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow - together with partners Walter Disner , Ulrich Disner , Gottfried Dön and helmsman Andreas Gregor, he won the standings of the oar steering fours, adding another gold medal to the track record.

For outstanding sports achievements he was awarded the Order " For Merit to the Fatherland " in silver (1976) and gold (1980) [1] [2] .

After completing his sports career, he worked as a mechanical engineer at the Zentronik factory in Dresden. Later he became technical director of the bobsleigh track in Altenberg.
