Biography

Hanun was born on April 7, 1954 into a peasant family in the city of Chekfa (Jijel province). During the War of Independence of Algeria, along with her family, she fled to the city of Annaba , after the house of her parents was destroyed by an air raid by the French army. She became the first woman from her family to start attending school. Graduated from the Law Faculty of the University of Algeria (1975).

When, after the unrest of 1988, the multi-party system was introduced the following year, Hanun and his comrades in the Socialist Organization of Workers managed in 1990 to form the Trotskyist Workers Party, which stands on the platform of the class struggle between the exploited and the oppressors. Hanun has been the leader and speaker of the party since its inception, in October 2005 she was elected Secretary General of the PT.

Hanun was repeatedly harassed by the authorities for its political activities. In January 1991, she became a co-founder of the International Organization of Workers and Peoples (associated with one of the Trotskyist Fourth Internationals , the Lambertist ), participated as a representative of the PT at various conferences.

During the years of the Civil War, she was one of the few representatives of the Algerian opposition who retained seats in parliament. Despite the secular nature of her party, she condemned the government’s policy of “eliminating” Islamists . In 1995, together with representatives of several opposition parties (including with Islamic radicals), she signed the platform of St. Aegidius . Along with the International Confederation of Arab Trade Unions and the International Confederation of Workers, Hanun opposed the US and its allies invading Iraq in 2003 .

Hanoun actively advocates for women's rights in Algeria , in particular she called for the abolition of the current family code on the grounds that it does not protect Algerian women in any way. In February 2011, she condemned the demonstration against President Boutefliki.

I tried to run for presidency in 1999 , but for the first time I was not allowed to join them. In the presidential election in 2004 she took fifth place with 1% of the vote, in 2009 - second with 4.4% of the vote, in 2014 - fourth with 1.37%. Considered the first woman in the Arab world to stand for election as head of state.
