Mola tecta ( lat. ) - species of ray-finned fish from the moon-fish family of the puffer -fish squad. Closely related to other species of the genus, but larger and wider than the common moonfish ( Mola mola ). It was first discovered on the coast near Christchurch ( New Zealand ) in 2014. Mola tecta was the first new species of the genus, discovered in the last 130 years [2] . The species was described in 2017 by Australian scientist Marianne Naygard ( born Marianne Nyegaard ) from the University of Murdoch in Perth .

Content
Description
The body of the moon-fish is thinner and smoother in adult fish than other species of the genus. Unlike other species, the Mola tecta lacks characteristic tubercles on the skin and a small growth on the dorsal fin. Larger than other types of moon-fish, reaches up to 3 meters in length and weighs up to 2 tons [2] .
Area
Inhabits the southern hemisphere, found off the coast of New Zealand , Australia , South Africa and Chile [2] [3] [4] . However, it was also observed in the northern hemisphere, in particular off the coast of the Netherlands (in 1889, when it was adopted as an ordinary moon fish ) [5] and found on the coast of California ( USA ) in 2019 [6] [7] [8 ] ] .
Power
They feed on salpids [9] .
