Born in Spain , in a family of immigrants from Hamburg . He lived in Amsterdam , where he entered into correspondence with the Leiden theology professor Gulziy, who wanted to convert him to Christianity. This correspondence was published under the title Disputatio epistolaris hebraica (1669), and reprinted in the annex to Nucleus Prophetlae Gulzia (1683).
In 1655 he became the Hacham of Rotterdam , and in 1680 - London , where he served until his death.
Abendana translated the work of Yehuda Halevi “ Kuzari ” from Hebrew to Spanish, in which he defended the tenets of the Jewish religion (1663). After moving to London, he translated the Mishnu into Spanish. His brother Isaac translated Mishnu into Latin.
