Biography

Klaus Kreppelin was born on June 29, 1958 in the city of Rostock , East Germany . He trained at the local Forverts sports club.

He first declared himself in rowing in 1976, winning a gold medal in the doubles fours at the world championship among juniors in Austria. A year later, he received bronze at the adult national championship of the GDR.

The first serious success at the adult international level was achieved in the 1979 season, when he entered the main team of the East German national team and attended the World Championships in Bled , from where he brought the gold dignity won in the doubles standings.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow - together with team-mate Joachim Dreifke, he won first place in men's doubles and thereby won the Olympic gold medal. For this outstanding achievement at the end of the season he was awarded the Order of Merit to the Fatherland in silver [1] .

After the Moscow Olympics, Kreppelin remained in the GDR rowing team and continued to take part in major international regattas. So, in 1981, in doubles, he won the world championship in Munich , thus becoming a two-time world champion in rowing.

In 1982, at the World Championships in Lucerne, he won a silver medal in the same discipline, losing to the Norwegian crew in the final.

In 1983, Kreppelin and Dreifke dropped out of the main team, losing to their main competitors Thomas Lange and Uwe Heppner in the GDR championship.

Klaus Kreppelin was considered as a candidate for participation in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , however, East Germany, along with several other countries of the eastern bloc, boycotted these competitions for political reasons. Instead, he performed at the alternative regatta Druzhba-84 in Moscow, where he became the best in the doubles program.

In addition to playing sports, he served in the naval forces of Volkswagen , after the unification of Germany he worked as a bus driver.
