Heir to the throne
Luigi was the younger half-brother of King of Both Sicilies Francis II . He was second in line for the throne of the Two Sicilies since his birth.
His father died on May 22, 1859. Francis became king, but he did not yet have children from his marriage to Maria Sofia of Bavaria . Luigi became his alleged heir. However, both Sicilies were conquered by the Expedition of the Thousand General Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1861. Garibaldi served the kingdom of Sardinia , which was in the process of Risorgimento .
Luigi was still the heir to Francis as head of the ousted royal house. He remained with him until the end of his life, but he died before Francis, who was ultimately succeeded by Alfonso Bourbon of Sicily, Count of Caserta .
Marriage
On June 5, 1861, Luigi of Bourbon-Sicily married the Princess of the Wittelsbach House, Matilda Louis of Bavaria , the fourth daughter of the Duke of Bavaria, Maximilian and Princess Louis of Bavaria . The marriage was unfortunate. Luigi was addicted to alcohol, and Matilda Louis spent most of her life separately from her husband, traveling with her sisters.
The couple had one daughter, Maria Theresa of Bourbon-Sicilian (1867-1909). In 1889, she married William of Hohenzollern , had two sons and a daughter.
Luigi also had an illegitimate son, Carl Duzzio (1869-1931).
