Biography
Florence Hutchison-Stirling was one of the five daughters and two sons of James Hutchison Stirling ( English James Hutchison Stirling ; 1820-1909), a Scottish idealist philosopher. She started playing chess at the age of eight or nine, soon reaching the level of the game like her father, who was interested in various board games. Florence Hutchison-Sterling was a member of the Edinburgh Ladies Chess Club and supported the activities of the Scottish Ladies Chess Association (founded in 1905). She was a five-time winner of the Scottish Women's Chess Championships (1905, 1906, 1907, 1912, 1913). Florence Hutchison-Stirling also became the first woman to compete in the Scottish Championship for Men's Chess (1925, 1927) [1] . She played in several UK women's chess championships , where she achieved the best results in 1913 when she shared the 1st place, but lost the playoffs for the champion title [2] , and in 1923, when she divided the 2nd - 5th place [3] . In 1923, in Portsmouth, she tied with Alexander Alekhine in a session of simultaneous play on 37 boards [4] . In 1927, Florence Hutchison-Sterling took part in the first tournament for the title of world chess champion , where she took 8th place [5] .
