Biography

Born July 9, 1822 in St. Petersburg. The younger son of painting professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts, Andrei Ivanovich Ivanov, and the younger brother of the famous author of "The Appearance of Christ to the People " Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov . He was educated at the Academy, studied at the architectural department of the Academy of Fine Arts under the main supervision of Professor A. A. Ton , who was assisted in the construction of the Church of the Annunciation in St. Petersburg [2] .

He received Academy medals: small silver medals - for drawings from nature (December 23, 1839 and May 4, 1840) and for architectural compositions (December 24, 1840 and May 10, 1841), and a large silver medal for the perspective view of the academic staircase (September 27, 1840). He competed for gold medals with the following programs: for the small one - with the β€œproject of the living room courtyard in the capital” (September 26, 1842) and for the large gold medal with the β€œproject of the public library” (September 26, 1843). But since Emperor Nicholas I found his last job not quite satisfactory, he ordered Sergei Ivanov to be left at the Academy until 1845, and only in 1846 did he manage to exercise his right to foreign pensionership for writing the facade of Prachshnogo Dom on Sergievskaya Street, which and was built on this project [3] .

He visited the main cities of Belgium and Northern France, examined ancient castles along the Loire and in the south of France. On March 26 of the same year, he arrived at his brother in Rome, where he began to study local monuments of medieval architecture and the remains of ancient buildings [3] .

Sergey Andreevich Ivanov loved ancient architecture and was interested in the restoration of ancient monuments. Upon arriving in Italy (in 1847–49), he began excavations at his own expense to search for the term of Emperor Caracalla, found beautiful mosaics, and discovered the ancient heating system of baths and the method of arranging vaults [3] . In 1848, on the occasion of the revolution that broke out in Rome, Emperor Nicholas I ordered that all retirees of the Academy, including Ivanov, be summoned from Italy back to Russia. The latter requested permission to remain in Rome in order to complete the excavation of the Caracalla term, but he was denied it. Then Ivanov, having his own money, decided to stay in Rome, without using government benefits [2] .

In 1858 he traveled to Athens (Greece), where he studied the ruins of the Acropolis , the temple of Theseus and the remains of the Herod Attic's theater [2] . Restored the throne of the famous statue of Jupiter Olympic, the work of Phidias [3] . Sergey Ivanov was an active member of the German Archaeological Institute in Rome. In addition to several reports of architectural and archaeological content, read in the meetings of this Institute, he wrote two more extensive works on the terms of Caracalla (published in Italian) and on the throne of the statue of Jupiter Olympic [2] .

Returning to Italy in 1858, Sergey Ivanov lived there for the rest of his life and, dying, bequeathed all his collections and his brother’s collections to the Moscow Public and Rumyantsev Museum [3] . The German Archaeological Institute was transferred to its library and all the capital, with the condition that the interest from them should be first published drawings of the testator's brother on scenes from the Holy Scriptures [2] . He died on January 29, 1877 in Rome [3] .
