Biography

The first German settlers on the territory of the Galician and Volyn principalities appeared in the XII century. The German community, along with Ruthenian , Jewish and Armenian, has been present in Lviv since its founding by Kings Daniil Romanovich and Leo Danilovich Galitsky. German immigrants brought to Lviv the traditions of Magdeburg law , in which the Voig ( headman ) led the affairs of the city community and represented it before the king.

Bertold Shteher, a German by birth, was the first known mayor ( voit ) of Lviv (c. 1300-c. 1330) [1] .

Bertold Shteher was among the founders of the Church of Mary Snezhnaya - one of the oldest temples in Lviv. For his work for the good of the city he received as a reward from Lev Danilovich the mill of Rural Kut over the river. Poltva , at the crossroads of the current Zamarstynovskaya and Khimicheskaya streets, lakes and 2 small estates in Malye Vinniki and Podberezetsy .

Thus, he became the first known owner of Vinnikov in history.

The ownership of these estates by the descendants of Bertold - Yuri, Rupert and Margarita - was confirmed by the Polish king Casimir III with his privilege of August 22, 1352. This letter was the first written mention of Vinniki.

The son of Bertold, Mateus, in turn, was the Voite of Lviv, and his great-grandson Pyotr Shteher was the city ratman and burgomaster in the late XIV - early XV centuries. He built a city water supply and supervised the construction of the Latin Cathedral in Lviv .
