History

Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, demolished in 1871. In its place was built the Church of St. Thomas

Ground

In 1859, a Catholic mission began to operate in the city. Its foundation was made possible after Mary Ann Wood presented the Catholic priest with a building on Burgate Street, the current presbytery. The land around the house was bought later for the construction of the church and school. A medieval chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built on this plot of land. In 1871, the chapel was demolished, although its tower stands to this day. [2]

Construction

In 1874, construction work began on the new church. It was designed by John Green Hall, a local architect. The design of the church was influenced by Eduard Welby Pugin, who died in 1875 and worked at Hales Place in the 1860s. The main altar and the altar of the Virgin Mary were designed by A.E. Purdy. On April 13, 1875, the church was opened. The first Mass was held by the Archbishop of Westminster , Cardinal Henry Manning . [2]

Significant structural changes in the interior of the church occurred in 1962/63. Above the altar there is a stained glass window with a double rose under the Gothic arch. In the 1980s, work on the internal device was largely completed. A new octagonal limestone altar with marble columns was installed (the main altar remained in place). A font was installed in the sanctuary.

In the box of the church is an organ restored in 1990. [3]
