History
In 1911, the spouses Morgan and Emily Carkeek hosted their first annual Founder's Day party (ball) at their home, to which guests in historical costumes were invited to bring artifacts and documents related to early Seattle. As a result of subsequent parties, the Seattle Historical Society was formed in 1914, the members of which could be the first white settlers and their descendants.
The society did not have a permanent building of its own to accommodate existing artifacts, whose collection grew every year. In 1945, Boeing allocated $ 50,000 to create its own building with an aviation display, and over the next 5 years, the historical community acquired its site in the Montlake area. The created new museum was opened in 1952. [2] Over the next 50 years, the museum has experienced ups and downs. In the 1990s, he began to recover from organizational and financial problems, expanding training and educational programs.
Due to the impending reconstruction of the SR-520 bridge, the Museum of History and Industry was forced to move from its place in the Montlake area and also began its reconstruction. In June 2012, the museum completely closed its exposition in Montlake and on December 29, 2012 held a public grand opening of its building in a new house in the South Lake Union area . [3]
