Location

Canterbury Castle was one of the three original royal castles of Kent (the other two are Rochester Castle and Dover Castle ). They were all built shortly after the Battle of Hastings , on the main Roman road from Dover to London . This was the route traveled by William the Conqueror in October 1066. All of them were originally built as mott-type locks and bails to guard this important route. [3]

History

Epoch of the Norman Conquest

In 1066 a wooden type motte and bailey was erected. Its center can be a mound, which is still visible in the gardens of Dain John next to the stone castle (which, in turn, may be a Roman mound). And the very name of the garden, Dane John, comes from the word donjon .

Stone Castle

A large stone fortress was built during the time of Henry I as one of the three royal castles in Kent. It is a massive structure, mainly built of rubble, flint and sandstone. By the 13th century, the castle became a provincial prison, which was surrendered to the invading French during the First Baronial War . In 1380 a new gate was built in the castle. [four]

In the 19th century, the castle was acquired by a gas company and used as a gas storage for many years, during which the upper floor was destroyed.

Tourist Attraction

The castle is currently owned by the municipality and is open to the public all year round. It is the largest tourist attraction in Canterbury after the Canterbury Cathedral .
