History

The monastery of the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites has existed since the 17th century. The stone church was erected in 1639-1644. at the expense of the Mstislav governor Joseph Korsak, who was buried in his crypt. In 1735, the church was rebuilt in the Vilnius baroque style according to the project of the architect I.K. Glaubits , at the same time a stone residential monastery building and a gate were erected. Later, a boarding school, a library, a hospital, a pharmacy functioned at the monastery, and there was a complex of office and storage facilities. The monastery was closed in 1865. The church since 1875 acts as the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Virgin. From the residential building only one wing was preserved, the other two were dismantled in 1892 [1] .

Architecture

The surviving complex includes the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin (the former church), entrance doors and a decorative gallery around the perimeter of the church, a monastery building and a fence with gates [2] . The church is a three-nave four-tower basilica. The abundant decor of the facade is represented by pilasters, stripes, profiled rods, niches, etc. A three-story rectangular building with a courtyard adjoins the church from the north-west. Three-span gates (brama) in the late Baroque style are located on the axis of the church [1] .
