Friedrich Ludwig (Friedrich Ludwig; May 8, 1872, Potsdam - October 3, 1930, Göttingen ) is a German musicologist, one of the greatest mediaevists of his time. It is best known as a researcher and publisher of monuments of European polyphony of the 12th-13th centuries (see Ars antiqua ) and the 14th century ( Ars nova ). He introduced the concepts of square notation and isorhythmia into science.

Biography Essay
At the University of Strasbourg he studied general history, as well as the history of music (Gustav Jacobstal's class). In 1896, he defended his doctoral dissertation as a historian ( Untersuchungen über die Reise- und Marschgeschwindigkeit im 12. und 13. Jh .; Supervisor Harry Bresslau ). Friendship with Albert Schweitzer and Hans Pfitsner contributed to the formation of Ludwig's creative and scientific views. In 1905-20 he taught at the University of Strasbourg (since 1910 professor of music history). After Strasbourg came under the jurisdiction of the French, he moved to Gottingen, where in 1920-30 he taught at the professorship at the University of Gottingen (in 1929-30 the rector of this university). Among the students of Ludwig are Heinrich Besseler , Friedrich Hennrich, Higini Anglès, Heinrich Guzmann, Joseph Muller-Blattau .
