Biography

Childhood and Youth

Mikhail Mikhailovich Kalashnikov was born into a peasant family in the village of Undol (now part of the city of Lakinsk, Vladimir Region ). While studying at school, he showed a penchant for community service. He was an active member of the school pioneer organization, then joined the Komsomol . In 1924 he graduated from high school and came to Moscow , where he entered the printing house of the Pravda publishing house as a laborer and soon mastered the profession of a line etcher-zincographer. At the same time, he also worked in a photo circle at the editorial board of Pravda and illustrated the printing newspaper Pravdist [1] .

In 1925, Kalashnikov joined the Komsomol , was elected deputy secretary of the Komsomol cell publishing house. In 1928 he was admitted to the ranks of the CPSU (b) , was elected party organizer of the illustration, information and foreign departments. In 1930 he moved to the illustration department of the editorial board of Pravda. Since 1939 he was appointed and. about. Head of the Illustrative Department of Pravda [1] .

Pre-war years

Mikhail Kalashnikov was instructed to conduct the first responsible shootings at the 16th Party Congress , which was held from June 26 to July 3, 1930 in the Bolshoi Theater . He will later recall [2] :

 Here I first shot Comrade Stalin. Delegates during the break went outside. Comrade Stalin often returned from the congress on foot. On Sverdlov Square, I managed to photograph him. When I had to capture the meetings of the leaders of the party and government with noble people in photographs, I saw Comrade. Stalin peppy, cheerful. In dealing with people, he is always modest and simple, he carefully talks to everyone, shakes hands tightly with everyone. In conversations at the meetings of Comrade Stalin jokes cheerfully, creates an atmosphere of ease. 

Later, more than once, Kalashnikov had to shoot not only Joseph Stalin , but other leaders and iconic personalities of the country, including Maxim Gorky , George Zhukov , Valery Chkalov , Pyotr Kapitsa and others.

World War II

Death

Mikhail Kalashnikov died on April 19, 1944 during the Crimean operation during the Soviet assault on the Sapun mountains near Sevastopol [3] [4] , where the photographer went to shoot the city from the German invaders [5] . After the death of Mikhail Mikhailovich, the baton of the most critical shootings was taken by his wife, Maria Ivanovna Kalashnikova. At her husband’s tomb, she made a promise to continue his beloved work and to give herself all to work, to serve the Motherland, for which he died [5] .
