Biography

Born on August 3, 1442 in Mirandol. He was the eldest son of Gianfrancesco I, owner of Mirandola and Count of Concordia and . On the paternal side was the grandson of , the owner of Mirandola and the Count of Concordia and Catherine, the aristocrat from the house of , the owners of Bevilacqua and Brentino. On the maternal side was the grandson of , Count Scandino and Gviducci, aristocrat from the house of , counts Correggio. Galeotto had two younger brothers - Antonio and Giovanni and three younger sisters - Catherine, Julia and Lucretia.

Galeotto was knighted in Ferrara in 1452 by Emperor Frederick III on the occasion of his appointment as Duke of Borso d'Este. In 1467, he fought alongside Bartolomeo Colleoni against the Medici. In 1470, he imprisoned his brother Antonio under the pretext of wanting to suppress riots. Although Antonio was released two years later, this did not diminish his hatred of Galeotto. After Borso's death in 1471, Galeotto strengthened his friendship with the new Duke Ercolle I d'Este, concluding an alliance treaty, and in 1473 joining a group of ambassadors sent to Naples to accompany his bride Eleanor of Aragon to Ferrara. ,

In 1452, in Ferrara, Emperor Frederick III knighted him when he granted Borso d'Este the title of Duke of Modena and Reggio. In 1467, under the command of Bartolomeo Colleoni , Galeotto participated in the war against the Medici house. In 1470, he was captured and imprisoned in the fortress by his younger brother Antonio, who wanted to rule instead of the possessions of the house of Pico della Mirandola. In 1472, Galeotto managed to free himself, but he did not take revenge on his brother. After the death of Borso d'Este in 1471, he established close relations with the new Duke Ercole I d'Este, concluding an alliance agreement with him. He joined the embassy, ​​sent to Naples to accompany the future wife of the Duke of Eleanor of Aragon.

In 1478, he entered the territory of the Republic of Venice due to the unrest that began after the Pazzi conspiracy, and sent military assistance to the Florentines. Accused of betrayal by the Venetians, in 1486 he entered the service of Ludovico Moreau, Duke of Milan, who appointed him ruler of Parma. In 1494, through the mediation of Ludovico Moreau, the emperor confirmed his right to the birthright and all the possessions of the house of Pico della Mirandola, but his younger brother Antonio still disputed his right. In 1495, Galeotto fought on the side of the Duchy of Milan at the Battle of Fornovo. In 1496, when his younger brother Antonio was convicted of a felony, for Galeotto all the titles of the house of Pico della Mirandola were finally confirmed.

He died of malaria on April 7, 1499 in Mirandol. The remains of Galeotto were buried in a family tomb in the church of St. Francis in Mirandole, despite the fact that he was excommunicated by the efforts of his younger brother Antonio, but received a dispensation from the pope. The widow of the owner and count on his tomb erected a monument. Galeotto I was succeeded by his son Gianfranchesko.
