Biography

Born in 1976 in the city of Leninakan (now Gyumri, Armenia) in the family of an artist-painter. In 2010 he graduated from the Institute of Contemporary Art. The artist is considered an analytical branch of Moscow conceptualism, although Paruyr himself is in no hurry to talk about himself as a representative of a certain direction. He is a regular participant in creative associations, where he works together with Yuri Albert, Victor Skersis and Andrei Filippov. As part of the Cupid art group, Paruyr is engaged in the creation of total installations, in the Edelweiss artel - in performances, or rather, as the artist himself says, in activities divided into actions. And in the group “King of the Hill” he creates picturesque works.

Solo exhibitions of the artist were held at the Center for Contemporary Arts, the Osnova Gallery and the State Museum of Architecture. Schuseva. Member of group exhibitions at the Multimedia Art Museum and MMOMA.

In 2015, as part of the 6th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, the artist presented his project “What is Art?” Candy vending machines were installed at the Biennale venues, inside which were also statements by famous cultural figures about contemporary art. Anyone could buy such a candy for 10 rubles, and all the money raised went to educational programs at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Initially, the project was conceived as a criticism of museum institutions. [one]

In 2018, works from the Elementaries series were presented at the Cosmoscow international contemporary art fair. Director of the Multimedia Art Museum and art critic Olga Sviblova admitted that she has long been a fan of Paruyr Davtyan’s work and has acquired one of the works presented for her own collection. “In fact, these are masterpieces that cost a penny, because 1200 euros for an artist who will cost forever tomorrow. Firstly, he lives in art with incredible potential and “seriously”. He makes new series all the time. I believe in Paruyr Davtyana, I am happy and believe that smart people buy young artists when they cost nothing, ”said Olga Lvovna. [2]

The artist's works are in the collections of the Multimedia Art Museum, the Garage Museum of Modern Art and private collections.

Creativity

The object of Davtyan’s creativity is art itself, which he explores and reinterprets. The artist’s picturesque works refer to impressionism, mannerism and abstraction, leaving no opportunity to give them an exact definition. The viewer is presented with hybrid and transitional forms - hazy, but at the same time recognizable images. Both in personal practices and as part of art groups, Paruyr Davtyan plays the role of a researcher. Encountering, disputing and intertwining theories of art, the artist asks himself what is art itself.

Abstract Series

This series presents large-scale abstract paintings. The artist himself speaks of it as a kind of theory uniting textual, narrative, conceptual and color-form art. Rooted in inforalism and the conceptualization of the formless, Davtyan develops the idea of a dramatic combination of the incompatible. In the pictorial series, the subject and abstract, unique and circulation, index and symbolic forms of art clash and challenge each other. As a result of this process, hybrid and transitional forms are born - strange, but recognizable images.

The Elementaries Series from the Garden of Internal Stones Project

In this project, the artist turns to the spatial model of the garden, where, in an irreparable contradiction, real and ideal, natural and artificial, truth and fiction, idleness and zeal coexist. The garden is an example of an enclosed space characteristic of the practice of the Cupid group, which previously, among other things, featured the station supervisor's office, meeting rooms and huts.

In the form of a herbarium, plants - "elementaries" are combined with images that arose in the process of collective creativity and realized in the projects of the art groups "Edelweiss", "Cupid" and "King of the Hill".

Edelweiss

Edelweiss Creative Association was founded in 2011. His goal is a theoretical and experimental study of the morphology and processes of art. As part of the group, artists are engaged in the creation of performances.

In 2011, at the Multimedia Art Museum, participants in the art group showed the first appearance of the Orangery series - Victoria Regia. In the same year, they entered the short list of the Kandinsky Prize with the performance “Tea Rose”. In 2014, the group performed at the opening of the Kandinsky Prize in the Central House of Artists with the performance "Nasturtium".

Cupid

The Cupid Artel was founded in 2008 by Yuri Albert, Victor Skersis and Andrey Filippov, and in 2015 Paruyr Davtyan became a member. In their installations, artists collide incompatible models of art, during which new meanings are born for the perception of the viewer.

In 2015, the installation “Station Caretaker” was presented in the space of the Stella Art Foundation. [3] In this project, through the metaphor of the subway, artists reflect on the emergence of various artistic movements. In 2017, the Cupid artel presented the total installation The Gang, which considers art as the result of errors and misunderstandings. [four]

King of the Hill

In 2014, Yuri Albert, Victor Skersisis, Andrei Phillipov and Paruyr Davtyan founded the group “Tsar of the Hill”, within the framework of which they are engaged in painting and comprehend its problems. The name of the group arose during their joint trip to Mount Saint Victoria, with whom Cezanne wrote his series “Mount Saint Victoire”. The participants describe the group’s philosophy as: “Image of the imaginary, imagination of the image, image

images, imagination of the imaginary, image of the imaginary image, imagination of the imagined imaginary ... - this is where the dog of creativity is buried! ” [5]

In 2017, their exhibition “Allegorical Abstractions” was shown at the Multimedia Art Museum. The exhibition includes paintings created at the intersection of abstraction and allegorical academism.

IPSI

In the summer of 2018, Paruyr Davtyan became the acting rector of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Moscow, which he graduated in 2010. He led the protest of students and employees of IASP against the self-proclaimed rector Svetlana Kalashnikova. Davtyan secured her removal, began to search for a new building (the former was transferred to the Tretyakov Gallery and closed for reconstruction) and opened a student reception for the new school year. At the end of the outgoing year, he gave up rectorial authority in favor of the IASI research supervisor Stas Shuripa. [6]
