History
First Hotel
The first hotel was built at the end of the XVIII coachman Vasily Pozharsky. Initially, this building was not a hotel - in this capacity, one of the heirs, Evdokim Dmitrievich, began to use it. In 1834 he bequeathed the hotel to his daughter - Daria Evdokimovna Pozharskaya.
The hotel becomes famous throughout Russia thanks to Pushkin , who has repeatedly visited Torzhok and stayed here. So, the quatrain is known from a letter to 1826 to Sobolevsky :
“... At leisure, dine
Pozharsky in Torzhok,
Fried cutlets
And go light ... "
Zhukovsky , Gogol , Belinsky , Turgenev and other famous people also stayed at the hotel. The hotel was famous for its patties , which were tried by Emperor Nicholas I himself , and who subsequently repeatedly invited Daria Pozharskaya to cook for the royal table.
Due to the increase in the number of people wishing to visit it, the hotel becomes small and cannot accept everyone, and in 1840 the owner petitioned the provincial road and construction commission for the construction of a new, large hotel.
In May 1840 disassembled.
Second Hotel
Built during the summer-autumn of 1840. The most expensive interior items were bought for the hotel - mirrors, curtains, paintings, furniture, etc. Until the death of Daria Pozharskaya in 1854, the hotel continued to be popular with the most famous people of Russia, but after her death all property went under the hammer. The building and most of the furnishings were bought in 1857 by the merchant Pavel Fedukhin, who arranged a tavern here. Another strong blow to the hotel was dealt by the Nikolaev railway , which passed Torzhok in 1861. As a result, the number of people traveling dropped significantly, which significantly reduced revenues. The hotel changed its owner and destination again: the merchant Barskov became the owner, part of the rooms on the top floor were leased to a merchant club, the largest room became an auditorium, where artists, occasionally passing through Torzhok, performed, on the ground floor there was a restaurant and billiards. It was in this state that Lev Tolstoy found the hotel in 1881.
After the Revolution
On October 27 (November 9), 1917, Soviet power was established in the city. The hotel was chosen for the Council of Workers 'and Soldiers' Deputies, the building is nationalized. Later, until 1920, the Novotorzhsky district council met here, 1920-1922 - the club of the Novotorzhsky Fire Society, after - the club of railway workers named after the Paris Commune. During this time, the building has lost most of the decor, having come into disrepair.
Current status
The restoration began only in 1992, but due to lack of funds it was never completed, although it was close to completion. A new restoration began only in 2011, but already in October 2013 it was completed. At the moment, the hotel belongs to the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum.
