Biography
He worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris . In 1935–37 - Director of the All-Ukrainian Institute of Bacteriology, Epidemiology and Serotherapy (now the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Kharkov ).
In the early 1930s. investigated the effect of bacteriophage on living organisms.
On August 2, 1937, he was arrested; on November 20 of the same year, he was sentenced to death for charges in an anti-terrorist organization. Rehabilitated in 1956.
The nephew is Ion Saulovich Melnik (1935–2018), a Soviet songwriter and conductor.
