Biography
Representative of an old noble family von Plessen from Mecklenburg , known since 1097. The son of statesman, political and diplomatic leader Christian Siegfried von Plessen . Brother politician Christian von Plessen .
Educated at Leiden and Utrecht universities . In his student years, he made friends with the heir to the throne, Karl of Denmark , the son of Christian V and Charlotte Amalia Gessen-Kasselskaya . In 1696-1699 he accompanied him on a trip abroad . After he was appointed Prince Majesty's Marshal , eventually became his irreplaceable friend, whom he had a great influence on, and was in this post until the death of the Prince in 1729. He also maintained friendship with the sister of Prince Sophia Gedwig of Denmark and after the death of Karl became the marshal of her court.
He played an important role at the beginning of the reign of King Christian VI , was a Privy Councilor and a member of the Royal Council of Denmark from 1721 to 1733, served as treasurer of the wife of the heir to the throne.
Later, however, he lost favor with the court and resigned in 1733.
After unsuccessful attempts to return to the royal court, Frederick V was in the service of Sofia Gedwig of Denmark . Sophia Gedwig was officially unmarried, but it was rumored that she had secretly married her servant Karl Adolf von Plessen.
C. von Plessen was a major shareholder of the Danish Asian company , which traded with India and China and the Danish West Indies company . He was the president of the Danish West Indies company and the initiator of the purchase of the island of Santa Cruz from France in 1733, thus expanding its West Indies [1] . He supported financially the first organized missionary work in Africa to educate Africans.
He owned a number of estates in Denmark and the Danish West Indies . He founded 16 state schools in his possessions and was personally interested in overseeing their activities.
