Starting from the Salon of 1791 [5] , he creates portraits of both revolutionaries, nobles and bourgeois. He painted portraits of famous people of his time: Napoleon I , King of Holland , Madame Recamier , etc [5] . In 1806, Jacques Augustin was awarded a gold medal and a sum of 250 francs. His recognition survived the change of many regimes under which he worked.

Having grown rich, Augustin married on July 8, 1800, one of his students, Pauline Ducruet , who was 22 years his junior. She was an assistant husband and did independent work.

In 1821, the artist was awarded the Legion of Honor. In the last years of his life, he suffered from gout and died on April 13, 1832 in Paris as a result of a cholera epidemic. He was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery . [6]

Together with the miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Isabey , Jacques Augustin was the most significant teacher of miniature painting of his time and brought up a large number of students.

Lycée Lycée professionnel Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin in the city of Nancy is named after him. [7]
