Competitions for the 124th time are held on the outdoor hard courts of the Olympic Tennis Park in Sydney , Australia .

The tournament was held from January 10 to January 16, 2016.

Last year's winners:

  • in the women's singles - Czech Petra Kvitova
  • in the men's doubles - India Rohan Bopanna and Canada Daniel Nestor
  • in the women's doubles - USA Bethany Mattek Sands and India Sanya Mirza

General Information

The first seeding number in the men's singles tournament was Bernard Tomic (No. 18 in the world at that time). The Australian tennis player reached the quarter finals, where he refused to continue the match against Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili . Last year's champion Viktor Troitsky defended his title as the third seeding number and successfully completed his task. In the final, the Serb was able to beat No. 4 of the sowing of Grigor Dimitrov . Gabashvili became the only representative of Russia in the main draw and as a result reached the semifinals, where he lost to Troitsky.

The women's single tournament was to gather four representatives of the Top 10 of the world ranking, however, the second seeding number Agnieszka Radwanska (No. 5 in the world at that time) and last year’s champion, seeded under the third number of Peter Kvitov (No. 6 in the world) withdrew from the tournament. The first seeding number was Simone Halep (No. 2 in the world). Romanian reached the semifinals, where she lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova . The Russian woman then was able to win the final match against Monica Puig , who qualified for the tournament. Kuznetsova became the first representative of Russia since 2010 to win singles in Sydney. In addition to Kuznetsova, two more Russians played in the main draw: Ekaterina Makarova (quarterfinals) and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (second round).

In the men's doubles, last year's tournament champions Rohan Bopanna and Daniel Nestor did not defend their title, but both took part in the tournament. Nestor, paired with Marcelo Melo, was seeded under the third number and finished the quarter-finals, while Bopanna, paired with Florin Merge , seeded at number four, was able to reach the final. In the decisive match, they lost to Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares .

The women's doubles went to the first issues of the sowing of Sanya Mirze and Martina Hingis . They won the title by defeating Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic in the decisive match of the third seeded. Mirza, therefore, won the competition for the second time in a row. Her partner in last year's victory, Bethany Mattek-Sands, did not take part in the tournament this year. Hingis also won the pair competition in Sydney for the second time with a difference of 18 years (before that in 1998 in a duet with Helena Sukova ).
