Daimler-benz db 603

Daimler-Benz DB 603 ( German: Daimler-Benz DB 603 ) - German aircraft engine used during the Second World War . By design, it is a V-shaped 12-cylinder inverted liquid-cooled engine with a displacement of 44.52 liters. DB 603 is a modification of the DB 601 engine, which, in turn, was a development of the DB 600 engine. Production of the DB 603 began in May 1942 [1] . The DB 603 was the largest inverted V-12 aircraft engine that was manufactured and used by the Third Reich military aircraft.

Development History

Initially, the DB 603 was used as an engine for a special Mercedes-Benz T80 car designed to set a speed record. The engine was designed to operate on a very specific fuel mixture - 63% methanol, 16% benzene and 12% ethanol with negligible percentages of acetone, nitrobenzene, avgas and ether. In addition, great expectations were placed on the direct injection of the MW 50 methanol-water mixture, an innovative technology from Luftwaffe . This system allowed for a limited time to increase engine power to 2959 liters. with. It was assumed that this will allow the T80 to accelerate to 750 km / h on a specially prepared 10 km track. But the start of the war put an end to these plans - the T80 never participated in races, and its DB 603 engine was removed from the car and transferred to Luftwaffe for use in fighter aircraft.

Heavy twin-engine fighter Me 410

As Germany's largest inverted V-12 engine in the war years, the DB 603 was widely used as the main engine for many twin-engine and multi-engine warplanes. It was used on the promising twin-engine heavy fighter Dornier Do 335 , front-engined twin-engine heavy fighter Messerschmitt Me.410 and on twin-engine night fighter-interceptors Heinkel Ne.219 Filin.

It was also used on some types of bombers - Dornier Do.217M (medium or front-line bomber) and Do.217H (night fighter), as well as on a six-engine flying boat Blohm & Voss BV 238 .

The engine was also used on four prototypes of the He.177B strategic bomber series , and two prototypes of the Heinkel He 274 high-altitude strategic bomber project with an additional turbocharger in each nacelle .
