History and Description
The first collection of exhibits, telling about the history and culture of the Vendians, was presented in the Cottbus ( local lore ) museum in 1908 - it existed in the public domain until the era of the Third Reich . Most of the exhibits from this collection were lost during the Second World War .
Already in the era of the GDR , in 1980, in Cottbus, in the palace located in Branits Park , a museum of literature in lusatians was created: at first it was a permanent exhibition, but then it became a traveling exhibition. Some time later, this collection was sent to the archive. After 1985, a new permanent exhibition was developed on the basis of archival materials: the goal was to create an exhibition not only about literature, but also about music, folklore and visual arts of the Vendian. After the re-unification of Germany , on June 3, 1994, the efforts bore fruit and a full-fledged museum of Vends was opened in the city [3] . In addition to the permanent exhibition, in the 15 exhibition halls of the museum of local lore more than four dozen special exhibitions of the most diverse subjects were held since its foundation: all exhibitions were bilingual (German- Sorbian ). Today, the museum holds the largest collection of Lower Sorbian national costumes.
